How to Get a Massachusetts Medical Card

LanternMay 8, 2020

Why should qualifying patients apply for a medical cannabis card in Massachusetts?

As a qualifying patient and resident of Massachusetts, there are a number of reasons to consider applying for a medical cannabis card:

  1. Patients are able to order cannabis online and have it delivered directly to their door.
  2. Medical cannabis is not subject to the same state and municipal taxes that apply to recreational cannabis.
  3. A wider variety of cannabis products is available to the patient community.

As a prospective patient in Massachusetts, what should I expect during my medical consultation?

  1. As a prospective patient, you'll work one-on-one with a qualified clinician, who will ask you a series of questions to determine whether medical cannabis is right for you.  Find a list of qualified clinicians below.
  2. Telehealth appointments are now available, so you can meet with the medical professional in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
  3. Prior to the appointment, you may be asked to fill out a questionnaire that outlines your medical concerns and conditions, as well as any experience using cannabis to address your condition.
  4. The clinician will discuss your medical condition(s) with you to determine whether they qualify as “debilitating condition" per the state of Massachusetts.  Debilitating conditions are defined by the state as:

Cancer, glaucoma, positive status for human immunodeficiency virus, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and other conditions as determined in writing by a qualifying patient's physician.

Once a medical clinician has determined that I have a qualifying condition, what should I expect when applying to get my medical marijuana card?

For those who qualify, getting a medical marijuana card in Massachusetts is a simple, private, and convenient process.

  1. If the clinician determines that you qualify, they will issue your certification and send your information electronically to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.
  2. New patients will receive a 14-day, temporary registration instantly, and will receive their permanent card in the mail after completing their full online registration with the Cannabis Control Commission.

It's easy to get started

Step 1

Understand if you have a “debilitating condition" that qualifies you to receive a medical marijuana card by a physician in the state of Massachusetts.

Step 2

Schedule a consultation with a state qualified physician.  Consultations may cost anywhere from $150-$250 and you may be able to pay with credit, debit, or cash.  Health Insurance does not cover consultations (or the cost of medical cannabis products).
